Everything Muslims should know about Dajjal
Who is Dajjal?
Masih ad Dajjal is also known as the false (deceiving) messiah or the imposter. Dajjal is directly comparable to the figures of the Antichrist and Armilus in Christian and Jewish eschatology. According to a hadith, the prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) is said to have prophesied that the Masih ad-Dajjal would be the last of a series of thirty Dajjal or "deceivers" (false prophets).
Dajjal is blind in one eye. However there is a contradiction about which eye is blind; the right eye or the left eye. Ibn Umar (r.a) reported that the prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) made a mention of Dajjal in the presence of the people and said: “… and behold that Dajjal is blind of the RIGHT eye and his eye would be like a floating grape.” (Sahih Muslim: Book 041, Number 7005)
However, in another authentic hadith, Hudhaifa (r.a) reported that the prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) said: “Dajjal is blind of LEFT eye with thick hair and there would be a garden and fire with him and his fire would be a garden and his garden would be fire.” (Sahih Muslim: Book 041, Number 7010)
Hence, there is a contradiction of which eye is blind. From one point of view, it can be possible to use the concept of “my right eye is on your left side” to clear off this contradiction. It may be that the right eye of Dajjal is blind but from the prophet’s (p.b.u.h) position, it was the left eye which is blind or vice-versa.
Only the believers will be able to read the word ‘Kufr’ [disbelief], inscribed in bold letters, on his forehead. The letters "Kaa" "Faa" "Raa" will appear on his forehead and will be deciphered by all Mu'mineen regardless of them being literate or not. He will have very thick hairs on his body. In a hadith narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar, the prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) said: "While I was sleeping, I saw myself (in a dream) performing Tawaf around the Ka'ba. Behold, I saw a reddish-white man with lank hair, and water was dropping from his head. I asked, "who is this?' They replied, 'The son of Mary.' Then I turned my face to see another man with a huge body, red complexion and curly hair and blind in one eye. His eye looked like a protruding out grape. They said (to me), he is Ad-Dajjal." The Prophet added, "The man he resembled most is AbdulUzza ibn Qatan, a man from the tribe of Khuza'a.
In addition, Ubadah bin Saamit (r.a.) once said:"I have explained Dajjal to you but I fear that you might not have understood. Maseeh Dajjal will be short, and his legs will be crooked. The hair on his head will be extremely twisted. He will have one eye while his other eye will be totally flat. It will neither be deep (in its socket) nor protruding.
Signs of apparition of Dajjal
The following signs are described to Ali in the coming of Dajjal; People will stop offering the prayers, Dishonesty will be the way of life, Falsehood will become a virtue, People will mortgage their faith for worldly gain, Usury and bribery will become legitimate, Imbeciles would rule over the wise, Blood of innocents would be shed, Pride will be taken on acts of oppression, The rulers will be corrupt, The scholars will be hypocrites, There will be acute famine at the time, There will be no shame amongst people, Many people would worship Satan, There would be no respect for elderly people.
The Dajjal Era (Dangers of Dajjal)
The prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) Said: “I harbour fear in regard to you in so many other things besides the Dajjal. If he comes forth while I am among you, I shall contend with him on your behalf, but if he comes forth while I am not among you, a man must contend on his own behalf and Allah will take care of every Muslim on my behalf (and safeguard him against his evil). He (the Dajjal) will be a young man with twisted, cropped hair, and a blind eye...”
Dajjal will emerge between Shaam(Syria) and Iraq, and his emergence will become known when he is in Isfahaan at a place called Yahudea.
The jews will be his main followers. This is why Dajjal is often cited as the Jewish King. However, apart from having mainly Yahudi followers, he will have a great number of women followers as well.
He will have with him fire and water, but in reality the fire will be cold water while that what appears to be cold water will in reality be a blazing fire.
Dajjal will auto proclaim himself as God and he will have supernatural powers which will be allowed to him by Allah. Hence, Dajjal will be a sort of a test by Allah to the believers. Among the supernatural powers of dajjal is that he will be able to bring life back to the dead once he already killed them, he will have a control over the rainfall, that is the rain will fall by his will, and crops will grow up from the soil following his command.
Dajjal will also have his own paradise and hell by which he will mislead the people. The one he will proclaim as paradise will, in reality, be hell and the one he will proclaim as hell will in fact be paradise. He will have a river in his possession. Hadhrat Mughira ibn Shu'ba (R.A.) said: "No one asked the prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) about Dajjal as much as myself. The prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) said to me, "How can he possibly harm you?”. I said: "People are saying that he will have with him a mountain of bread (provisions) and a river of water." The prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) said: "In the sight of Allah he is much more disgraced than that. (I.e. Allah knows full well that in reality Dajjal has nothing with him, and all that which appears to be with him is but deception). (Bukhari and Muslim).
Hence all of these things will be made to happen for him by the Power and Will of Allah. Whoever follows him will disbelieve and be misfortunate and remorseful. Whoever disbelieves him is the true Believer whom Allah has granted success to be of the felicitous. May Allah make us of those who are granted the success of felicity.
An-Nawwas ibn Sam'an (r.a) narrated that the companions asked the prophet(p.b.u.h), how long will Dajjal stay on Earth?
He said: “For forty days, one day like a year, one day like a month, one day like a week, and the rest of the days will be like your days.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah (p.b.u.h) will one day's prayer suffice for the prayers of the day equal to one year?” Thereupon he said: “No, but you must make an estimate of the time (and then observe prayer).” They said:O messenger of Allah (p.b.u.h): “how quickly will he walk upon the earth?” Thereupon he said: “Like cloud driven by the wind. He will come to the people and invite them (to a wrong religion); they will affirm their faith in him and respond to him. He will then give a command to the sky: there will be rainfall upon the Earth and it will grow crops. Then in the evening, their pasturing animals will come to them with their humps very high, their udders full of milk and their flanks distended. He will then come to another people and invite them. But they will reject him so he will go away from them; they will have a drought and nothing will be left with them in the form of wealth. He will then walk through the desert and say to it: Bring forth your treasures. The treasures will come out and gather before him like a swarm of bees. He will then call someone in the flush of youth, strike him with the sword, cut him into two pieces and (make these pieces lie at the distance which is generally between the archer and his target. He will then call (that young man) and he will come forward laughing with his face gleaming (with happiness)…”
Dajjal will travel at great speeds and his means of conveyance will be a gigantic mule. It is said that he will play beautiful music which will attract the music lovers. He will travel the entire world. He will send down rains upon those who believe in him, which in turn will cause good crops to grow, trees to bear fruit and cattle to grow fat. He will cause drought to those who disbelieve in him, resulting in starvation and hardship for them. During those trying times the Mu'mineen will satiate their hunger through the recitation of Subhanallah and La'ilaha Ilallahu. The hidden treasures will spill forth at his command.
Hadhrat Asma bint Yazeed (R.A.) narrates that Rasulullah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) once came to my house and there he spoke about Dajjal. He said that before the emergence of Dajjal there will be three spells of drought. In one year the skies will withold one third of its rains, causing the earth to withold one third of its produce. In the second year the skies will withold two thirds of its rains, causing the earth to withold two thirds of its produce. In the third year, the skies will withold all its water and there will be no crops that year. All animals, be they hooved or toothed, will die as a result. The greatest evil of Dajjal will be to approach anyone and ask him: "If I bring your camel back to life, will you then believe that I am your Rabb?" This person will reply, "Most certainly." Thereafter Shaytaan (from the many Shayateen who will always accompany Dajjal) will appear before this person in the form of his camel with a fat hump and fully laden udders.
Likewise Dajjal will appear before another person whose father and brother have long passed away and ask him, "If I bring your father and brother back to life will you believe that I am your Rabb?" This person will reply, "Why not?" Shaytaan will once again take on the appearance of his brother and father... (Ahmad)
He will be unable to enter Makkah because the Malaikah will be guarding the Holy City and nor will he be able to enter Madina because there will be Malaikah guarding each of the seven entrances to Madina; From Madina he will proceed towards Shaam where Imaam Mahdi will be stationed. Anas (R.A.) says that Rasulullah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said: "Dajjal will come and finally reach the outskirts of Madina. There will be three tremors. At that time, all the disbelievers and hypocrites will flee (from Madina). In this way Madina Munawwarah will be purified of all the evil hypocrites.
In a lengthy Hadith narrated by Abu Saeed (R.A.), the prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) is reported to have said: "Dajjal will come but it will be prohibited and impossible for him to enter Madina. He will set up camp in a barren land outside Madina. One person who will be the best of persons will confront him by saying: "I bear witness that you are the very Dajjal about whom the prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) has informed us."Dajjal will say to his followers, "If I kill this person and then revive him, you people will still doubt me? They will reply, "No." He will then kill this person, (according to another narration he will split this person in two) and thereafter revive him. This person will say, "I am totally convinced more than ever before that you definitely are Dajjal." Dajjal will attempt to kill this person again but his efforts will now be in vain. (According to a hadith, after this incident, Dajjal will not be able to harm anyone.)
Dajjal will have the letters ك ف ر (k f r: the Arabic root letters for disbelief) between his eyes. Every Believer, even if illiterate, will be able to read and recognize the letters. All of these descriptions are found in rigorously authenticated reports from al-Bukhari, Muslim, and others.
After making use of supernatural powers, Allah will make him incapable of these supernatural events, so that he is not able to kill anyone, and his command is no longer executed. Then Prophet Jesus (upon him be peace) will make his apparition.
Death of Dajjal
It will be at this very time that Allah will send Isa a.s (Christ), son of Mary. He will descend at the white minaret on the eastern side of Damascus, wearing two garments lightly dyed with saffron and placing his hands on the wings of two Angels. When he lowers his head, there will fall beads of perspiration from his head, and when he raises it up, beads like pearls will scatter from it. Every non-believer who smells the odour of his body will die and his breath will reach as far as he is able to see. He will then search for him (Dajjal) until he catches hold of him at the gate of Ludd and kills him. Then a people whom Allah had protected will come to Jesus, son of Mary, and he will wipe their faces and inform them of their ranks in Paradise. It will be under such conditions that Allah will reveal to Jesus these words: I have brought forth from among my servants such people against whom none will be able to fight; you take these people safely to Tur, and then Allah will send Gog and Magog and they will swarm down from every slope. The first of them will pass the lake of Tiberias and drink out of it. And when the last of them passes, he will say: There was once water there.
Jesus and his companions will then be besieged here (at Tur, and they will be so hard pressed) that the head of the ox will be dearer to them than one hundred dinars. Allah's Apostle , Jesus, and his companions will supplicate Allah, Who will send to them insects (which will attack their necks) and in the morning they would perish as one single person. Allah's Apostle , Jesus, and his companions, then come down to Earth and they will not find on Earth as much space as a single span that is not filled with putrefaction and stench. Allah's Apostle , Jesus, and his companions will then beseech Allah who will send birds whose necks would be like those of Bactrian camels and they will carry them away and throw them where Allah wills. Then Allah will send rain which no house of mud-bricks or (tent of) camel-hair will keep out and it will wash the Earth until it resembles a mirror. Then the Earth will be told to bring forth its fruit and restore its blessing and, as a result thereof, there will grow (such a big) pomegranate that a group of people will be able to eat it and seek shelter under its skin, a dairy cow will give so much milk that a whole party will be able to drink it. The milking camel will give such (a large quantity of) milk that the whole tribe will be able to drink from it, and the milking-sheep will give so much milk that the whole family will be able to drink from it. At that time Allah will send a pleasant wind which will soothe (people) even under their armpits. He will take the life of every Muslim and only the wicked will survive who will commit adultery and the Last Hour would come to them.”
Protection against Dajjal
Imraan bin Husain (r.a.) said that the prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) said: "Those who hear about Dajjal should stay far from him. By Allah! A person will approach him thinking him to be a Believer, but on seeing his amazing feats he will become his follower."
The prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) has exhorted the regular recital of Suratul Kahf which will most certainly save one from the Evils of Dajjal as mentioned in the following hadith”
Hadhrat Imraan bin Husain (r.a.) relates that, "I heard the prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) saying: "Since the birth of Adam (A.S.) till the advent of Qiyamah there is no fitnah (evil, test) much greater that of Dajjal."
Because of the enormity of the trial that Dajjal will put people through, the Prophet (upon him be Allah's peace and blessings) encouraged us to seek refuge in Allah after every prayer from the tribulation of Dajjal.
Bukhari and Muslim relate the hadith from Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (p.b.u.h) said, "After one of you finishes his tashahhud (what is read in the sitting of the prayer [i.e. after he finishes his prayer]) let him seek refuge in Allah from four things: the fire, the torment of the grave, the trials of life and death, and the trial of the Imposter Messiah, the Dajjal.
Bukhari and Muslim also relate from Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (May Allah send His peace and blessings upon him) said, "Whoever memorizes the first ten verses of Surat al-Kahf shall be protected from Dajjal," and in another version of the hadith he (p.b.u.h) mentioned the last ten verses. Imam al-Nawawi says in Sharh Muslim, "It is said the reason for this [i.e. benefit of memorizing the mentioned verses of al-Kahf] is that its beginning contains wondrous events and signs. He who reflects on their meaning will not suffer the trial of Dajjal. Its final verses, beginning from, 'Do those who disbelieve...,' are similar [in what they contain]."
Al-Nawawi mentions the words of the prominent Imam al-Qadi `Iyad al-Maliki from his The Tenets of Faith of Ahl al-Sunnah, "These hadith which Muslim and others relate regarding the story of Dajjal are a proof of his reality for the way of those of truth. He is a particular person whom Allah sends as a trial to His slaves. Allah gives him the power to do things, and they are only from His powers... This is the way of Ahl al-Sunnah, the Scholars of Hadith and Jurisprudence, and their like."
Narrated Ibn Umar: Once Allah's Apostle stood amongst the people, glorified and praised Allah as He deserved. Then, mentioning Dajjal, he said, "I warn you against him (i.e. the Dajjal) and there was no prophet but warned his nation against him. No doubt, Noah warned his nation against him but I tell you about him something of which no prophet told his nation before me. You should know that he is one-eyed, and Allah is not one-eyed."
